n-3 HUFA have been used as feed in rnass cultivation of fish larva.2'5i Recentlydocosahexaenoicacid(DHA)wasrepertedtobethernosteffective n-3 HUFA for the growth of fish fry,6'7) but there is no known method to enrich zooplankton specifically with DHA, In this paper we report on enriching Euglena gracilis with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA, E. gracitis cells are about SO"m in size, contain nutritious proteins and vitamins8'9) and are so readily digested by erdinary digestive enzymesiO) that they are thought to be useful as feed for zooplankton in fish larva production. E. gracilis was reportedii) to be a good nutrient seurce for rotifers and Artemia, the zooplankton used in mass growing of fish fry, but to contain relatively little n-3 HUFA.i2'i6) Accordingly enriching the protozoa by such fatty acids should proyide a highly profitable feed for the zooplankton. Thus, the' n-3 HUFA-enriched zooplankton obtained are expected to enhance fish fry procluction, E, gracitis strain Z was grewn at 28MC in a medium composed ef 2% glucose, O.7% ammenium sulfate, e.5gS cern steep liquor, mineral$ (O.5% MgS04'7H20, e,5% KH,PO,, O.2% CaCO,, O,OS% Na, EDTA, O.05% FeS04(NH4)2SO,'6H,O, O.025% ZnSO,・7H,O, O.O18% MnSO,・45HiO) and vitamins (5mglliter vitamin B,, le"g/liter vitamin Bn) for 48 h in the dark. Lipid metabolism of manganese-deficient algae. I. Effect of manganese deficiency on the greening and the lipid composition of Euglena gracilis Z.
The growth of photoautotrophic Euglena gracilis Z is strongly inhibited by manganese deficiency, whereas chlorophyll formation is not appreciably affected. The galactosyldiglyceride content of the manganese-deficient photo-autotrophic Euglena was about 40% lower on the basis of either chlorophyll content or dry weight. When dark-grown cultures of Euglena were grown photoheterotrophically in lig...
متن کاملAliphatic Chains of Esterified Lipids in Isolated Eyespots of Euglena gracilis var. bacillaris.
Isolated eyespot granules of Euglena gracilis Klebs var. bacillaris Pringsheim contained approximately 6% lipids (based on protein). Separation of the lipid extracts by thin layer chromatography revealed four major fractions: wax esters, triacylglycerols, free fatty acids, and phospholipids. Methanolysis of each fraction yielded between 27 and 29 different fatty acids ranging from 12:0 to 22:6....
متن کاملFatty acid and metabolomic profiling approaches differentiate heterotrophic and mixotrophic culture conditions in a microalgal food supplement 'Euglena'
BACKGROUND Microalgae have been recognized as a good food source of natural biologically active ingredients. Among them, the green microalga Euglena is a very promising food and nutritional supplements, providing high value-added poly-unsaturated fatty acids, paramylon and proteins. Different culture conditions could affect the chemical composition and food quality of microalgal cells. However,...
متن کاملLeishmania tarentolae, Trypanosoma lewisi, and Crithidia sp.: a comparative study
On the basis of the unsaturated fatty acids which they synthesize, protists can be grouped in a meaningful way. Thus, the unsaturated fatty acids of the true slime mold are identical with the unsaturated fatty acids of the soil amoebae Acanthumoeba and Hartmannella but have no resemblance to those of the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium. Among the zooflagellates, Leishmania enriettii and Leish...
متن کاملEuglena extract suppresses adipocyte-differentiation in human adipose-derived stem cells
Euglena gracilis Z (Euglena) is a unicellular, photosynthesizing, microscopic green alga. It contains several nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and unsaturated fatty acids. In this study, to verify the potential role of Euglena consumption on human health and obesity, we evaluated the effect of Euglena on human adipose-derived stem cells. We prepared a Euglena extract and evaluated its effe...
